The Hands Together Long-Term Volunteer

Hands Together volunteers live in community at our center in Port-au-Prince. They are individuals who possess a great love for the poor and the desire to use their God given abilities to serve others and help this world. Participants live and work together in Haiti, practicing the simple spiritual principles of love, compassion and service.

Who is Eligible?

Hands Together seeks highly motivated persons full of joy and optimism striving to live a spiritual life based on Catholic-Christian principles. The candidate must be between the ages of 21 and 70 years old. Individuals with experience in the following areas are most needed: teaching, medicine and health care, building and general contracting, agriculture and water resources. Volunteers serve mainly as advisors -- working with the Haitian people who staff and run our sponsored Haiti projects.

Acceptance Requirements

Interested candidates should, in most cases, participate in a 6-10 day delegation experiential trip to Haiti prior to formalizing an application for the 90 day service position. Candidates pay their own delegation transportation costs -- but room, board, and in-country expenses are covered by Hands Together. The delegation experience allows the candidate to witness first hand the work of Hands Together and the conditions of Haiti. Upon completion of the delegation a candidate may make a formal application for long-term service with Hands Together.

Term of Service

Candidates accepted for volunteer service are invited to spend 90 days (renewable upon evaluation) in Haiti as a Hands Together volunteer. Candidates wishing to renew his/her service after his/her initial 90 day session, may be invited back after an evaluation by the volunteer committee.
